Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder which appears as white spots on the skin usually affecting both sides of the body. The disease has been around for thousands of years. Vitiligo affects both sexes, all races and all ages. It occurs in 1-2% of the population. In Vitiligo, the pigment cells of the skin “Melanocytes” which make the skin color are attacked and destroyed by the immune system. When the Melanocytes in a certain area die the skin turns white. No one knows why the immune cells attack the Melanocytes in people with Vitiligo.

A. Patients with Vitiligo are sensitive to free radicals and need aggressive vitamin therapy

B. Vitiligo runs in families (genetic factor involved).

C. Vitiligo may occur at the sites of old injuries.
